Jane Addams was an American social reformer, activist, and author. She was a leader in the women's suffrage movement and a prominent figure in the history of social work. She was the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. Addams was born in Cedarville, Illinois, to John Huy Addams and Sarah Weber Addams. She was the eighth of nine children. She attended Rockford Female Seminary in Rockford, Illinois, and graduated in 1881. Addams was a prolific writer and lecturer, and her works include Democracy and Social Ethics (1902), Newer Ideals of Peace (1907), Twenty Years at Hull House (1910), The Long Road of Woman's Memory (1916), Peace and Bread in Time of War (1922), and The Second Twenty Years at Hull House (1930). Addams died on May 21, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois. She was 74 years old.
